THE NATION ON THE SHOULDERS
- MEMO 9 / SEPTEMBER 2023 - EL SARAPE SALTILLO. More than a simple garment, thesarape is an iconic textile whose quality in yarn and weaving is elevated to the category of art, compared to the most exquisite textiles worldwide. With its distinctive tripartite design, it is a testament to the skill and artistic vision of Mexican artisans.
From the lands of Guatemala to the Navajo Indian region of New Mexico, the sarape has left its mark on the fabric of history. He Sarape Saltillo dates back to the 17th century, when an annual fair in Saltillo, in honor of San Mateo, attracted crowds in search of these textile treasures. Although it was produced in various regions of Mexico, Puebla, Texcoco, Querétaro, San Miguel de Allende and Tlaxcala, Sarape Saltillo became synonymous with quality and prestige.
During the turbulent times of the fight for independence, the serape not only provided shelter, but also became a symbol of bravery and resistance for the "chinacos." These brave fighters, known for their short jackets and their fearlessness on the battlefield, carried with them not only a protective mantle, but also a piece of Mexican identity and pride.
Theserape is a garment that transcends its utilitarian function to become a symbol of Mexican identity. It has been used by indigenous people, Spaniards, insurgents and Mexicans of all social classes. It is a symbol of national unity and a legacy of the anonymous weavers of Mexico.
