Faros cigarettes are one of Mexico's oldest and most iconic brands. Their origin dates back to Irapuato, Guanajuato, where they were patented in 1918 by Emeterio Padilla Silva, although a popular tradition places their birth around 1910, at the beginning of the Mexican Revolution.
Faros became famous for their low price, which made them the preferred cigarette of workers, farmers, and students for much of the 20th century. Their distinctive characteristics were the use of rice paper, the absence of a filter, and a simple paper pack.
The brand transcended the commercial sphere and became part of Mexican popular culture. The famous expression "Ya chupó Faros" (He's already smoked Faros) originated from it, used to indicate that someone was doomed or that a situation was hopeless.
The classic graphic design for the Faros cigarette pack was created by the Mexican painter and muralist Pedro Cruz Castillo. According to various historical sources about the brand, he created the famous illustration of the sailing ship at sea that appeared on the cigarette pack for decades. In the 1950s, the company modified the position of some elements of the original drawing, but consumers rejected the change, and the brand eventually returned to the traditional design.
