The transformation of Hans Gutmann Guster (Cologne, Germany, 1911) into Juan Guzmán (Mexico City, 1982) is significant as it expresses the turn his life took. Hans Gutmann's early formation takes place in Cologne, where he attends basic studies and grows up in a modest family environment. With the rise of Nazism gaining strength, his departure from Cologne to Berlin in the early thirties is no longer a sufficient remedy. He decides to leave Germany definitively and, working as a lighting technician in a film company, travels through France, Italy, and Greece. A few negatives from this period are preserved in his archives, already announcing his photographic eye.
