BOOK / "THE GREAT TENOCHTITLAN". Hernán Cortés
History / Narrative
In the Letters of Relation, Hernán Cortés informed Emperor Charles V about the discoveries in the new continent and the great events of the Conquest. Extracted from these epistles, in the narrative "The Great Tenochtitlan," Cortés describes his first impressions regarding the encounter with one of the most prominent indigenous civilizations: the city of Tenochtitlan, the flow of life in a lacustrine city, the beautiful architecture of its temples, and the enormous natural wealth of the surroundings. Dr. Ernesto de la Torre Villar emphasizes the virtues of this missive written by Cortés: "The description he gives us of the great Tenuxtitlan represents the first great portrait of a wonderful city that moved the enthusiastic and astonished mind of Europeans. A prodigious image of the city settled on the lakes, with exceptional majesty and greatness. Such is the value of this narrative, the first one we know, the most vibrant and lively."
