LITERATURE / POETRY
Lizzie Doten (1829-1913; approximate date of death), Plymouth, Massachusetts, was a popular American poet, although what made her (and still makes her) special is that she considered herself more than a poet, a medium through whom spirits dictated their verses: Shakespeare, Robert Burns, and Edgar Allan Poe, usually with a marked referential and biographical character. She was a great improviser, as many of the poems she received from the Beyond occurred suddenly in public. For Lizzie Doten, the poetry resulting from the communication between the spirit of a poet and a medium was a joint effort, involving both particular and general inspiration. Her printed poetry, on the other hand, was reprinted numerous times. Her most famous book was Poems from the Inner Life (1863), translated for the first time into Spanish, in which she compiled these poems "inspired" by spirits. She was also a women's rights activist. In any case, a forgotten figure who deserves recognition.
