LITERATURE / POETRY
Gérard Labrunie (1808-1855), known as Nerval, the most romantic of the French poets, took his own life on a freezing Parisian morning, with the caress of a noose around his neck. A few days later, his friends found among his belongings a notebook with some manuscripts, including letters addressed to the actress Jenny Colon (1808-1842), the supreme and unattainable love of the poet. This edition includes the final version of this love correspondence, along with a story by Théodore de Banville that is a clear fictional account of a real episode: Nerval's journey to seek and acquire exceptional furniture to prepare the room where he hoped to gain the favors of Jenny Colon – with a very different outcome than expected. The edition is completed by an article by Juan Eduardo Cirlot, a great admirer of Nerval, published in 1966 in the magazine Papeles de Son Armadans, which delves into the theme of love in the work of the French poet and the figure of the beloved always present in imagination but absent in reality, representing the soul.
