BOOK / INTIMATE DIARY. Pierre Loti
LITERATURE / BIOGRAPHY
"Everything, all of my past, has been swept away by an unexpected storm advancing over my head, advancing so quickly that I don't have time to see it coming, a love, a blindness of my senses against which I am powerless. Everything is erased and absorbed by this unique feeling, and I let myself slide down a delightful and terrifying slope that will end in some black swamp… And I wish this moment would last my entire life…"
Pierre Loti was a writer "almost unintentionally," a writer as if he didn't care about glory. A sailor by profession, he traveled halfway around the world aboard an English Navy ship and lived for long periods in exotic countries. However, his best-known works, such as Aziyadé or The Marriage of Loti, caused a true sensation in his time and sparked trends like incorporating Tahitian words into conversations or sending flower garlands. Highly admired by Raymond Roussel, he provoked great anger when, upon being named a member of the French Academy, Loti did not deign to respond to a congratulatory letter.
The sailor-writer who broke the hearts of all of France.
