What you see in this book lives in the intricate world that is built around the songs, and that the songs inhabit. It is the material from which the official work is born and nourished.

When I speak of the official work, I refer to the song or the book or the score that is published and ends up in the hands of the fans. The fans become its custodians. They possess it. However, behind the song, there are an enormous number of secondary things: drawings, maps, lists, doodles, photos, paintings, collages, and drafts, things that belong to the artist, secret and unfinished.

These things should not be considered so much as works of art as the hallucinated and compulsive superstructure that gives birth to the song or the book or the script or the score. They are a system of support of tangential and manic information.

I hope you find some value in them. For me, these pieces have a creative energy different from that of the finished work: raw and direct, but no less convincing.
