BOOK / THE BODY, THE SOUL, THE WORD. David Lorente Fernández
CULTURE / HISTORY
In this book, David Lorente brings together the voices of midwives, healers, herbalists, witch doctors, and hail makers to explain how the Nahua people of Texcoco understand and treat illness, as well as the ways in which they acquired the gift and knowledge to cure. The author devotes himself to observing and analyzing the complex system of specialists and the demands of the inhabitants in search of convincing answers to illness. In an environment dominated by cultural conflicts between Nahua medicine and biomedicine, Lorente also reveals the transcendental role of women, mothers, and healers in the therapeutic odyssey of the Mesoamerican peoples. The result is a series of novel proposals that go beyond the parish framework of the Sierra to invite, to this banquet, scholars of peasant societies beyond the cultural space of the Nahua tradition.
