La fleur de lis is the last book by the Uruguayan Marosa di Giorgio (Salto, 1932-Montevideo, 2004). Originally published just two months before her death, it is the crowning achievement of her work and closes the cycle of both her erotic stories and her poetry. These "love poems for Mario," as the dedication says, are at the same time prose and fragment, poem and memory, and, above all, overflowing erotic imagination. Each one of them, like a petal, condenses and reveals the places in Marosa's soul: the countryside, the garden, childhood, flora and fauna, sensual and at the same time terrible, rape, sanctity and dreams. The singularity of the gaze, the classification (fortunately) impossible. In fact, far from being the last, this is a first book, in the sense of primordial: the book that engenders all the previous books by one of the most important and beloved voices of 20th century Latin American literature.
