The Tonalá pottery seduces us through all five senses. Sight is summoned by the shapes and drawings. Hearing and touch too, as these pieces are praised for their sonority, porosity and polish. The water that is preserved in Tonalá clay acquires a purer flavor. But the sense of smell is the truly privileged one in the encounter with the “scented pottery” that is studied in these pages.
