MODERN ART

Alice Rahon was always a free artist, who never intended to represent Mexico, her adopted country, but found inspiration in its wide open spaces, its omnipresent nature, its bustling cities, and baroque festivals. She commands and seduces with an intimate, unclassifiable art, in which the poetry of images replaces that of words. Despite having enjoyed a brief period of notoriety in Paris as a poet, having been invited by André Breton to join the Surrealist circle, befriending René Char, collaborating with Man Ray, and being courted by Pablo Picasso, Alice Rahon (1904-1987) was long a complete unknown in France. This book is a tribute to one of the artists who did the most to create a space for abstract art in an artistic horizon long dominated by the figurative and socially engaged painting of the Mexican School.
