ART

Marcel Broodthaers (Belgium, 1924–1976) began his work as a visual artist at the age of 40. His training as a poet is combined with his desire to give materiality to language; to this end, he alternates between diverse media such as sculpture, installation, artist's books, painting, and film. His formal solutions evoke reminiscences of Magritte, surrealism, and pop art, which give meaning to the pieces and imbue them with humor and poetry; both important elements in Broodthaers's work. He constantly revised museum structures, such as the Musée d'Arte Moderne, Départment des Aigles (1968), and successfully exerted an institutional critique that made him an essential reference for later generations.

This book is a compilation of poems, pieces, images, and interviews fundamental to Broodthaers' work, translated into Spanish. The edition explores the most outstanding ideas in the artist's work. It moves between multiple formal and conceptual approaches, presenting a broad overview of some of his projects and the context in which they were developed. This book addresses topics such as modernity, the figure of the museum, and the social and economic dynamics of the art world. It is a concise selection, the translation of which preserves the wordplay that gives meaning to Broodthaers's work.
