PHOTOGRAPHY
Gabriel Orozco is one of the most renowned conceptual artists worldwide. Beginning in the 1990s, his work, including notable pieces such as DS, Empty Shoe Box, and Black Kites, sparked genuine interest among the public, critics, and art historians, who have devoted numerous essays to analyzing his work. Orozco has also been an important influence on contemporary Mexican art, both for his discourse, the media and materials he employs, and for the shift he has caused in the perception of conceptual art and Mexican art internationally.
"Photogravity" is a reissue of the catalog originally published for the artist's eponymous exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1999. It brings together texts, photographs of the work, and the artist's notebooks. This exhibition is assessed as follows by Ann Temkin in the book's epilogue:
“Photogravity deepens Orozco's exploration of the relationship between object and image. A sculpture can be a three-dimensional photo; a photograph, a two-dimensional sculpture. The distinctions between object and image were probably never as sharp as we supposed, but Orozco draws our attention to the ambiguities and rich possibilities that this relationship holds.”
