ART
Hélio Oiticica was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1937. Despite being well known in Brazil, Oiticica has only now gradually begun to be recognized internationally as one of the most profound and adventurous artists of recent times.
Oiticica was both an artist and a thinker. Boldly positioning himself between the avant-garde, Brazilian popular culture, the realities of "underdevelopment," and the radicalism of the 1960s, he profoundly reflected on themes related to "art," "invention," and "freedom" in our contemporary world.
A product of the brilliant explosion of artistic activity that took place in Brazil during the 1950s and 1960s, which encompassed music, film, and an avant-garde stance with his innovative "bolidos," penetrables, and parangoles in the mid-1960s, he later spent time in London and New York before returning to Brazil, where he died in 1980 at the age of 43.
The pages of this book contain many of the texts the artist wrote to understand and communicate his work. These are writings linked to his work, in which he vigorously develops his views on art and culture, analyzing Brazilian social reality immersed in the economic and social oppression of a globalized world. It also contains essays that friends and critics wrote for the original edition, published in parallel with the artist's first major retrospective in 1992.
