NARRATIVE
Maloca is the collective home of the Yanomami, an indigenous people of the Amazon rainforest. And "Maloca, maloca?" is the message that opens the radio communications between the jungle villages where a young Italian pediatrician lived, serving in the ranks of the humanitarian organization Doctors of the World. The protagonist of this book is a Western woman who experiences firsthand all the contradictions of encountering another culture. She accepts being compared to shamans, is outraged by the gang rapes that the young men of the village boast about, rebels when a woman thinks of killing her newborn child, and laughs when she finds an entire family in the trunk of her car.
There is wonder and familiarity; love and despair; bewilderment and understanding in the story of this doctor, capable of witfully alternating between the stethoscope and the pen. In a word, there is passion: for her profession and for a people who, despite the geographical and cultural distance, feel close and friendly. In this delicate narrative, the doctor's scientific approach coexists in perfect harmony with the woman's empathetic perspective.
