ESSAY

The period Fernando Fernán Gómez spent in Rome working on the film The Conscience Accuses, by Czech director Pabst, shaped the cinematic and personal future of the man who became one of the most respected and beloved Spanish intellectuals of all time.

His encounters with the most celebrated artists and film stars of the era, the contagious euphoria of post-war Rome (in contrast to the stifling atmosphere of the Franco dictatorship in Spain), and the international and worldly atmosphere of the Italian capital left a profound impression on the young Fernán Gómez, who sought to immortalize this joyful and fruitful period of his life and art in a diary that was originally partially published in installments in the now-defunct Revista Internacional de Cine (International Film Magazine), and which is fully recovered in these pages to offer the reader a more intimate and informal side of the great filmmaker.

The book, published to commemorate the centenary of his birth, also includes the collection of poems To Rome for Something, born from the same Roman experience that gave birth to the diary.
