DRAMA
Flor Fané immerses us in the world of Olga, a girl living a stifling family situation with a controlling father in a home where peaceful days are a thing of the past. Her powerful imagination, combined with her survival instinct, will accompany her into adolescence. Sara Morante—an illustrator with a long and fruitful career who, with Flor Fané, writes her second full-length work after La Vida de las Paredes (Lumen, 2015)—narrates this story from the protagonist's subjective perspective, in the first person, leaving the reader to make their own reflections. In Morante's words, "I wanted to explore the effects of violence and how to counteract it through creation, through imagination, which is the protagonist's refuge, but giving all the space to those who suffer it, not to those who perpetrate it."
In Flor Fané, text, illustration, and comic are part of the same narrative. “I was able to do something I'd wanted to do for a long time,” Morante continues, “tell a scene through sequences of drawings. Give it movement. For the drawings, I used all the techniques I know, avoiding digital: pencils, gouache and watercolor, collage of drawings... It was like going back to the beginning, when I started in illustration, and even beyond, to the drawings of my childhood. It's intentional: I found the loose strokes that gave me more freedom to tell this story.”
