Luis Ortíz Monasterio moved to California in 1925, where he worked and furthered his studies. He presented his first works at the Book Shop Gallery in Los Angeles and at Gump's Art Gallery in San Francisco. In 1946, he participated in the International Sculpture Exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
In 1948, he was invited by architect José Villagrán García to participate in the call for proposals from the newspaper Excélsior and the Department of the Federal District to create the Monument to the Mother. He created the bust of Antonio Caso, which was unveiled at El Colegio Nacional on March 2, 1961.
In 1967, he won the National Prize for Fine Arts. In 1968, he was a founding member of the Academy of Arts. From the 1960s, he devoted himself to producing small-format and easel works. He died on February 16, 1990.
