GRAPHIC NOVEL
October 1965. The troupe of giants from Pamplona, a typical image of the San Fermín festival, is invited to parade through the streets of New York. But not everyone will be able to participate: due to racial discrimination, the American authorities prohibit the two black giants from participating.
Based on this historical event, Black is Beltza tells the story of Manex, the bearer of one of these giants who, faced with censorship, embarks on a long and unexpected journey in which he will witness key events in history, such as the racial riots resulting from the assassination of Malcolm X, the eccentricities of the characters in The Factory, the alliance between the Cuban secret services and the Black Panthers, and the proto-hippie psychedelia of the first rock festivals—all in different geographical locations such as Mexico City, Havana, Los Angeles, Montreal, Algiers, and Madrid. A kind of road comic, this graphic novel draws on the spirit of that era, its music, its characters (including Muhammad Ali, Emory Douglas, Jimi Hendrix, Juan Rulfo, and Che Guevara, among others), and the ideas that shaped the struggles for social equality, freedom, and justice in those turbulent sixties.
