STORY

“We Saw a Tree Burn” is composed of stories that form a novel, or vice versa; it is a vast novel fragmented into stories set in present-day Cuba. “Humberto” and “Silvia” are the characters in the stories. Alternating as protagonists, they navigate through love, illness, sexuality, death, children, the streets, and the lines awaiting those who will wait in them.

Through everyday scenes and gestures, the reader learns about the characters' entire lives, their individual histories or those shared in a long-standing marriage. The characters' past and future are there, visible.

At the same time, the stories evolve, re-emerge, and are reconstructed. The present is now or yesterday, but these two don't get lost; they seek the future and build a life, even if they sometimes have to drive around in an old Lada.
