Liminal regions are a threshold to the unknown: to inhabit the limen is to brush against symbolic death. However, in secular societies, the zones of transition between different places and also between different stages of life ceased centuries ago to have any meaning outside of their practical function. The idea of passage requires slow rhythms of life, and speed obliterates intermediate spaces. In this essay, we propose to linger in them and populate them with voices from multiple disciplines that lead us through some symbolic places: walled gardens, limbos and bards, perilous bridges, narrow gates, crossroads, axis mundi, mouths of the underworld, threshold guardians, and psychopomps. Mythical topographies are thus superimposed on real cartographies and contemporary cross-border experiences in order to swell the margins: those of the city and those of the world, those of memory and imagination. With a prologue by Victoria Cirlot.
