This book owes its existence to a series of questions aimed at exploring the photographic portrait. It bears witness to a personal fascination—one I suspect is widely shared—with any face or body transformed into an image and printed on a sheet of paper.

But *Question the Portrait* owes its existence, first and foremost, to the fortuitous discovery of an enigmatic collection of images that, amidst moldy junk and old newspapers, I rescued minutes before it was to be thrown away.
