If, indeed, there is no such thing as innocent photography, as Eugenia Meyer asserts, the use of images recognizes diverse actors and authors, as well as multiple intentions and recipients.

Understanding photography as an indicator of history allows and compels a series of theoretical and philosophical postulates aimed at understanding the purpose of each image, its content, and what it tells us, as well as scrutinizing the setting and the very purpose of each photograph.

In her introductory essay, the editor of this volume lays the groundwork for historians to access photographic archives in search of alternative perspectives, alternative ways of understanding and interpreting the past.

The four essays are complemented by a pertinent and up-to-date bibliography, serving as a resource for research. In none of them do photographs replace traditional sources of historical work; on the contrary, they enrich and strengthen it.
